July Friday Nighter, 7/12/19

July 1, 2019 By Kelly Smith Leave a Comment

The next rally in the series is the July Friday Nighter, “Medium Spicy,” a joint effort between FOOTZ and PSRC. The rallymaster is Mike Daily. Mike has designed an interesting course that wanders around the Hobart area before arriving at Farrelli’s Pizza in Maple Valley. https://farrellispizza.com/locations/farrellis-maple-valley-wa/ We ran the checkout last weekend and had a blast. There are a few traps that are relatively simple, yet challenging. Nobody got lost on the checkout. The course was assembled in a way different from those that have used the area in the past and it was interesting and enjoyable. This rally has supplemental rules, and here they are:

Registration for this novice oriented event opens at 6:45 PM at the Eastgate Park & Ride Parking lot in Bellevue (14200 SE Eastgate Way). The drivers meeting is at 7:10 and first car out will be 7:31. The entry fee is $20. Don’t forget that we’re running the “bring a new team and your entry is free” special.  Come on out and join us for a good time, and bring your friends!

30 Years ago, give a take a year or two, I wrote my first rally. It pretty much followed this same route, although the end of the odo check was where the Costco is now, and the rally ended at Round Table Pizza, which went out of business a few years ago. The Fall City area has been spared some tremendous growth by a limitation in their sewer system to take more customers. Anyway, this even worked out much like the original one did, with everyone finishing and having a good time. The checkpoints were near the river, so we were fortunate to have cloud cover that kept the rafters away. It meant that we missed a nearly full moon, but the event was all but over when it started getting dark.

Thank you to the workers who gave their Friday Evening to work the rally, Andy Newell, Charles Aggenbach and Mike Daily at Checkpoint 1/3 and Steve Roberts and Don Gibson at checkpoint 2. And you all did a fine job on the do it yourself checkpoint 4. Thanks to John and Derris Humphrey, who checked out the route along with Roberts and Gibson. Also, a special thanks to Dave Treen who made the trophies and the dash plaques, ran pace and helped me measure the rally. Without these folks, these rallies could not happen.

Next month, Mike Daily will be putting on the rally in a joint FOOTZ and PSRC adventure. Mike’s rally will be entertaining and challenging for those trying to get the traps right, and it will be a fun run for those who go out for a ride. Come on out and join us!

June 14th, 2019

Here we go again. This Friday, June 14th, the Northwest Rally Council presents “Back to the Future, part 42”, the June Friday Nighter Rally.
The Rallymaster is yours truly, Kelly Smith. The course meanders around the greater Fall City Area before ending in Issaquah at Tutta Bella’s Neapolitan Pizzeria. https://tuttabella.com/pizza-issaquah/ The checkout was most entertaining and I am looking forward to running through the course again. There are a few light traps, but nothing that will hurt you too bad.

John Humphrey was the rally master of this event. There were no traps, so it was a pretty easy run. A sign that was used twice on leg 3 went down between the checkout and the rally, so we had to use a course marker for it. Unfortunately, because it was in the middle of construction area with lots of cones and warning signs, it was hard to pick out. It unfairly penalized at least four cars, so we threw the leg. The rest of the rally went off pretty much without a hitch. It was a beautiful night and a fun rally. Thanks to Debbie Sjodin, Mike Workman and Dave Treen for working the rally. Thanks to Mike Daily and Charles Aggenbach for working the start control. Without workers, these rallies could never happen. And thank you all for attending.
